Football · World Cup 2026 · Group Deep Dive

Every team’s chance of finishing first, second, third or fourth — and what that means for the road to the round of 32. Top two go through automatically; the eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups also advance.

FIFA 2026 group tiebreakers — in order
  1. Most points across the three group games
  2. Then, among teams still level — head-to-head first:
  3. Points in the matches between the tied teams
  4. Goal difference between the tied teams
  5. Goals scored between the tied teams
  6. Still level? Back to the whole group:
  7. Overall goal difference
  8. Overall goals scored
  9. Fair-play / team-conduct score
  10. FIFA world ranking (replaces drawing of lots for 2026)

Best third-placed teams (8 of 12 advance) are ranked by points → goal difference → goals scored → conduct → FIFA ranking. New for 2026: head-to-head is applied before overall goal difference (the reverse of 2018/2022).
